Andy Byford is a transport professional whose career has spanned three continents over three decades. Today, he serves as Special Advisor to the Amtrak Board of Directors and is leading the effort to transform New York Penn Station.
Andy joined London Underground in 1989 as a uniformed Station Foreman and has gone on to lead the largest transit systems in the United States, Canada and the UK, as well as running day-to-day operations on Australia’s busiest network.
This unique achievement has given Andy a rare global perspective on transport operations, finances and politics that translates to his current role, delivering a world-class station that New York, New Jersey and America deserve.
Andy grew up in Plymouth and is a graduate of the University of Leicester.
Join us for an update on the latest progress toward transforming New York Penn Station with Andy Byford.
Earlier this year, the Trump administration announced a new federal effort to lead the redesign of New York Penn Station, the busiest transportation hub in the country. Amtrak and USDOT have since launched a procurement for a Master Developer to break ground by the end of 2027.
Andy Byford, Amtrak Special Advisor, will outline the most recent developments and open a conversation with Forum members.
How can Amtrak and the federal government deliver a world-class transportation hub for the nation’s busiest station?

About Public Works
Public Works is a discussion series to drive civic dialogue around new and forthcoming built environment projects in New York City. Throughout the year, we invite government officials and private sector leaders to present design and development initiatives that shape the public good. Our goal is to create an open and collegial venue for deeper conversation between the public sector and our network of civic leaders building, caring for, and maintaining our city.
Support Our Work
Public Works is made possible through the support of our Board of Directors, Director’s Circle, Company Members, and our Campaign for Courageous Leadership, and company and individual members. Our programs are made possible by the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of the Office of the Governor and the New York State Legislature.
