Urban Design Forum #408
401 Broadway, New York, NY, USA
Danny Pearlstein is Policy & Communications Director at the Riders Alliance, New York’s grassroots organization of subway and bus riders. He started advocating for better public transit in high school and has worked as an urban planner, a City Council staffer, and a lawyer representing injured workers and low-income tenants.
John Surico is a journalist, educator and researcher, who focuses on mobility and open space. His reporting can be found in The New York Times, New York Magazine, Bloomberg CityLab, and elsewhere. He is the Senior Fellow for Climate and Opportunity at Center for an Urban Future, one of New York City's leading policy organizations, where he oversees their research portfolio on parks, open spaces, and the built environment. He teaches cities-centric reporting at New York University's Arthur L. Carter Journalism Institute, his alma mater, and holds an MSc in Transport and City Planning from University College London's The Bartlett School of Planning. He writes a monthly newsletter, on cities and how they're changing, called Streetbeat. And what's left of his time is dedicated to advocating for livable streets and green space where he lives in western Queens, as the chairperson of the 31st Ave Open Street Collective, Inc.
Join us for a two-part op-ed workshop with Danny Pearlstein and John Surico.
The scope of our Public Works program is expanding to provide tools that amplify our members’ voices on the most pressing issues in the built environment.
Over two sessions, the workshop will cover the purpose of op-eds, their role in advocacy, and how to effectively pitch to publications. By the final session, Fellows will have a drafted and peer-edited piece. This workshop is designed for Fellows with limited experience in argumentative writing who want to sharpen their skills through a hands-on approach.
The workshop will be led by Danny Pearlstein, Policy and Communications Director at Riders Alliance, and John Surico, a journalist and research fellow at the Center for an Urban Future.
The workshops will run from 9:00 – 11:00am, February 14th and February 28th. Forum Fellows are invited to register their interest. Limited spots available.

About Public Works
Public Works is a discussion series to drive civic dialogue around new and forthcoming built environment projects in New York City. Throughout the year, we invite government officials and private sector leaders to present design and development initiatives that shape the public good. Our goal is to create an open and collegial venue for deeper conversation between the public sector and our network of civic leaders building, caring for, and maintaining our city.
Support Our Work
Public Works is made possible through the support of our Board of Directors, Director’s Circle, Company Members, and our Campaign for Courageous Leadership, and company and individual members. Our programs are made possible by the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of the Office of the Governor and the New York State Legislature.
