Pedestrian Plazas

Tim Tompkins reflects on ten years of “plazafication” in New York.

Started under Bloomberg and continued with the current administration, the Department of Transportation has built more than 70 pedestrian plazas as a way to improve traffic flow and add public space. To many, they look like parks in the street.

Tim Tompkins, President of Times Square Alliance: “D.O.T. broke some eggs when they created this program, and now we’re all making the omelet. The complex work is how are the ingredients going to be different in Times Square than in Elmhurst?”
