CEBU BRT System

Carlos Arnaiz develops the first BRT system in the Philippines.

“As a part of the Philippines’ first Bus Rapid Transit system, Cebu needed a system of modular stations that responded to the local context while projecting the future of new Cebu. We designed a roof and canopy structure borne out of one folding operation whereby the horizontal and vertical surfaces are geometrically matched to create bus stations, with an alternating spatial bias for loading passengers and draining rainwater toward retention tanks that keep the roads dry during the wet season. The design produces maximum opportunity through a limited set of architectural moves, paying special attention to how the strict pragmatics of infrastructure responds to the culture of place through an evocative screen of louvers that echo Cebu’s long legacy of textile production.”
